Local Quake Info
Helen Broughton
Councillor Riccarton/Wigram
Hello Everyone,
It has been a very difficult week, but good
progress has been made and Christchurch people have responded magnificently
to the challenge.
Riccarton/Wigram is the largest ward in the city with 63,700 people.
Having driven around our ward the day after the earthquake and
last week, the area most affected is Halswell. As yet Councillors
do not have access to clear, accurate data of areas or streets
most affected.
Sam Johnson, a Community Board candidate for Riccarton/Wigram,
has done a sterling job in organising students to assist with the
clean-up across the city. The students first turned up to help
in Halswell.
I understand Council staff should be in the Halswell area this
week to clear away residue. If there is another area particularly
affected please contact me.
Areas of Particular Concern
• Halswell School – currently closed, children
are being relocated. Structural engineering advice
is being sought.
•
Demolition of 3 Character Commercial Buildings on Riccarton Road – On
Friday 10 September three commercial buildings were demolished under
police supervision. I am currently trying to establish if Council
had granted authorisation. It is important we preserve our character
and heritage buildings, wherever possible.
